Homeschool Math Problems...
Dealing With Algebra

When I was 12, algebra sounded like a cuss word.  “How dare you say the A-word in front of me?!”

You might think that’s an exaggeration… but it’s not.  Think back to your own highschool years…

For the first 12-14 years of your life, letters were letters and numbers were numbers... regardless of if
it was public school or homeschool math and English. Then you pop open your first algebra book and all of a sudden the two seem to have gotten mixed up.

There’s a whole new language written on those pages that might as well be Latin and you see no reason why the language you know isn’t good enough anymore.  It’s a frustrating experience…

And it's not just frustrating for the kids...

Trying to teach homeschool math to your child can be just as bad... especially when it comes to algebra.  After all, you already “speak the language,” and your child doesn’t.

Variable and exponent and formula have been a part of your vocabulary for so long that it’s hard to understand why it’s hard for your kids to understand…

And that’s where I was with my parents.  During the day my mother would teach History, English, Geography and Science and at night my Father would set up the white board and attempt to teach us Algebra. The worst of all homeschool math

Nothing sunk in.  On the first problem, I would learn that x was equal to 6, but the very next problem, x would be equal to 14.

“Huh?”

After weeks of frustration and growing tension between me and my father there was a break through...

My father made a small adjustment to the way he taught and suddenly math was easy!
